More than 75 cents of every health care dollar spent in the United States goes toward treating chronic diseases such as arthritis, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Consequently, employer-sponsored wellness programs are on the rise. UBA’s 2012 Health Plan Survey points to an increase in wellness program adoption among employers; in 2012 81.0% of employers offered a health risk assessment, 65.4% offered incentive awards, 52.0% offered gift certificates or paid employees’ health club dues, and 44.0% paid cash toward employee premiums.

The rules on how wellness programs are implemented recently changed as a result of the Affordable Care Act, and employers need to be aware of the new restrictions.

Unum is hosting two free webinars, sponsored by United Benefit Advisors (UBA): “Health and Wellness and Employee Motivation: Making the Connection” on August 27, 2013 at 2 pm ET and “Legal Considerations When Developing an Employer-Sponsored Wellness Program” on August 29, 2013 at 2 pm ET.

The webinar, “Health and Wellness and Employee Motivation: Making the Connection,” will prepare employee benefits and human resource managers to manage and consult upon the emerging issues related to the multigenerational workforce including productivity and motivation. The presentation examines the healthcare industry and its unique challenges in managing productivity due to the aging population, health reform, disengaged workers, and the need to mitigate the impact of the rising costs of healthcare among its own employees. To ensure that your wellness programs are PPACA-compliant, Unum is hosting the “Legal Considerations When Developing an Employer-Sponsored Wellness Program” webinar that will review new rules for wellness programs under health care reform. To register, visit: https://getsix.in/o7du8.

“Wellness programs can be a very effective way for employers to lower health care costs,” says Thom Mangan, CEO of UBA. “However, as a result of recent PPACA regulations, employers need to know how to properly implement a wellness program and how these changes affect their overall employee benefits planning.”
