Marriage Penalty

Originally posted by United Benefit Advisors (UBA)

Some married couples who fall just above PPACA’s premium subsidy cutoff are crying foul, according to a combined report from Kaiser Health News and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The cutoff for a subsidy is $45,980 for single adults, but $62,000 for married couples without children. As a result, some couples are complaining this amounts to a marriage penalty. For couples with a household income of $70,000 with one spouse making $30,000 and the other $40,000, they would be ineligible for subsidies if married, but would both be eligible if they were just living together.
